Reading proficiently by the end of third grade is a crucial marker in a child’s educational development. Research shows that one in six children who are not reading proficiently in third grade do not graduate from high school on time. Proficient readers are four times more likely to graduate on time than those with below basic scores.

Although schools must be accountable for helping children achieve by providing effective teaching for all children in every classroom every day, schools cannot succeed alone. Engaged communities mobilized to remove barriers, expand opportunities, and assist parents in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities as full partners in the success of their children are needed to assure student success.

That’s why a regional group of funders is taking initiative to inspire a new, local approach to improve childhood literacy in the Coeur d’Alene School District.

The co-funder group, consisting of Inland Northwest Community Foundation; Numerica Credit Union; Community Focus Trust, Columbia Trust Company, Trustee; Mountain West Bank; and Bouten Construction Company, will provide $600,000 over three years to the University of Idaho, working in partnership with the Coeur d’Alene School District.

Together they will create and implement school-community collaborations addressing important areas such as kindergarten readiness, teacher education and development, parent engagement, and out-of-school programs. The goal: to significantly increase the number of K-3 students that read at grade level in the Coeur d’Alene school district.
